Vilas County is rich in history, nature and culture, and often it is that culture that provides us with that same purpose and sense of wonder. Georgia O'Keeffe once said, "I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn't say any other way - things I had no words for."
A cultural establishment that offers people of all ages that sense of wonder and purpose can be found in Land O' Lakes. Established in 2008, Land O' Lakes Arts (LOLA) is dedicated to promoting the arts in Northern Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan through classes and cultural events for all ages, year-round. It's mission is to support local artists in fulfilling their artistic potential while also bringing enrichment, arts education and beautification to the people of the area, which contributes to the vitality of the larger community.
"LOLA offers something for everyone: art exhibits, musical performances, lectures, Reader's Theater, cooking, dance classes, pottery throwing, painting, and a wide assortment of classes in various mediums," said Wendy Powalisz, LOLA Program Director. "LOLA hosts many free events, looking to bring creativity and vibrancy into the community - Porch Songs Summer Music Series, Arty Parties, and art demonstrations including pottery, carving, indigo dying, plein air painting, and more."
Activities are indeed year-round, and while managed differently during Covid-19, here is the annual event list: on June 21st LOLA celebrates Make Music Day https://lolaartswi.com/classes-events/make-music-day/ with live performances throughout town. September brings Art Harvest, featuring artist demonstrations, tours of the Community Garden, and a quilt show. October is the Annual Zombie Crawl, where area artists face-paint zombies, then crawlers shuttle to local bars and restaurants. Winter brings more events, including National Youth Art Month in March, where local students feature their artwork in a gallery.
From mid-June through mid-August, classes are focused towards families, held every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon. Adult classes are year-round with local artisans as instructors. Some adult classes include: watercolors, acrylic painting, line dancing, fiber arts, wood working, cooking, and writing. "As a non-profit with just two staff and a volunteer board, the heart of LOLA is still the community," said Wendy. "Without the support the community has shown for us, we wouldn't be the Arts Center we are today."
